Faith - History and Geography

This coming week we will be exploring several aspects of the reformation including Germany - culture and music, the Printing Press, Martin Luther and how faith ties it all together.

You have many choices to inspire you this week.

Read the section in this book on Gutenberg on page 33.  Discuss how the invention of the printing press has changed your life.

Research, share and discuss of the faith of one of your ancestors.  How does their faith help you today?   We'd love you to write or record your story and share here in the comments.

Pick a German game, craft, play or song to learn as a family from the Germany section of Month 10 on libraries of hope.   There are lots of options!

Share the story of Boxes for Katje we read in class with your family. Can you remember what it was about?  Think of a way your family can serve someone who is struggling and do it.

See you soon!

  1. Eliza: My great great great grandmother, Alma Kane. She had 2 daughters and they lived far from town and other people. There once was a wildfire that came really close to where they lived. In the middle of the night the fire was at their home. She had prepared a few things in a root cellar like blankets, a little food, and a barrel of water. The root cellar wasn't very deep so she couldn't stand up in it. When she woke up and realized what was happening she got the girls in it. She want back in the house for a few more things and was prompted that her little girl was in danger. She found the girl had come back in the house. She wasn't able to get anything else out because they was afraid they might follow her again. She spent the rest of the night. wetting blankets and putting them over the whole. When that one was dry she would take it down and put the other wet blanket up and get that one wet again. She fell asleep doing this. When she woke up the next day the fire had burned everything. It took several days before people can looking for them because they thought they had died. She had an idea to dig where the potatoes had been planted. They had cooked in the ground and they were able to eat them. She join the church when she was in her 90's but I think she received blessings for what she was doing long before she joined the church.

  3. Anya: My Grandpa Tyler had taken my dad and his siblings to pick wild blueberries. When they where done they were tired so they were cutting across a field. They was a bull that was watching them but it was far away. Before they got out of the field the bull was by them and it was mad. My Grandpa saw that it was dangerous and coming to them. He told the children to get close to him. Then he used the priesthood and offered a prayer and the bull stopped. They all got out safe.

Another time my Dad was way down in an underground cave. The base for his favorite flashlight fell off into a deep space. He could see it with his friend's flashlight. He decided to wiggle down in the space and try to get it with his feet. He could feel it and thought he had it but it was something else. He tried again. He kept trying but felt he needed to leave it and get out. When he tried to pull himself out he discovered he was stuck. No matter how hard he tried he couldn't get out. He told his friend. His friend tried to help him take off his sweat shirt to make it easier but his sweatshirt got torn and even when it was off he was still stuck. His friends flashlight battery was dying so he had to leave my Dad. My Dad would pray and then would try to get out. He could only move a little at a time and then he was stuck again. He would pray again and move a little more. He did this over and over. He finally got out. As soon as he wasn't stuck he and his friends said a prayer to thank Heavenly Father. He had a big bruise on his chest and bruises and cuts on his back.

  4. Thank you for your stories of faith. I love how my great grandma during the Great Depression walked 13 miles in worn out shoes to pay all the money she had for her tithing even though her husband and all her children told her she should use it to buy shoes. She followed her conscience and guess what happened? My grandma who was 16 at the time got a job cleaning the house of a wealthy women in the neighborhood. The lady happened to be cleaning out her closet and gave my grandma 5 pairs of almost new shoes that would just my great grandma's side. The Lord will always give us more than he asks for - he doesn't need our money but he gives us opportunities to show our faith.
