Leadership: Courage

This month's principle is Courage.  There are a lot of misconceptions about what courage means.  It doesn't mean to be fearless.  It isn't reckless.  It is so much more.  For your inspirements this week we are going to learn about what courage REALLY is.  In class we will discuss how having the courage to act appropriately helps us to be great leaders.

Listen or Read this talk by Thomas S. Monson - listen for what he says courage is and make a notebooking page so you can remember what you learn and put it in your notebook.  Bring it to share on Wednesday.

I loved this quote from Christian author Charles Swindoll: “Courage is not limited to the battlefield … or bravely catching a thief in your house. The real tests of courage are much quieter. They are inner tests, like remaining faithful when no one’s looking, … like standing alone when you’re misunderstood.”

President Monson added "I would add that this inner courage also includes doing the right thing even though we may be afraid, defending our beliefs at the risk of being ridiculed, and maintaining those beliefs even when threatened with a loss of friends or of social status. He who stands steadfastly for that which is right must risk becoming at times disapproved and unpopular."

President Monson talked a lot about courage.  In this talk he tells us about three kinds of courage we should have.

1.  the courage to refrain from judging others;

2.  the courage to be chaste and virtuous; and

3. the courage to stand firm for truth and righteousness.

Discuss as a family what these types of courage look like.  How can you develop the three kinds of courage President Monson taught us about?   Think of your favorite stories we've discussed so far this year and discuss how they showed courage and which type of courage was it?

Look at this picture.  How is this boy showing courage?  When have you had to show courage to stand for what is right?

Watch this video  How do you feel when you listen to these youth sing about courage?  Do you feel courage in your heart?

Read this story about David. (S6 pg. 106)  What allowed David to have so much courage?  Who did his courage come from?  Which type of courage did he show and how?  Do you think God gave you courage?

Watch this video on having the courage to stand alone.
This is a great book about Heros. Take some time to read about a couple of heros in this book.  How did they show courage?  One of my favorites is this story about King Alfred
