Imaginative Arts: Holland! Hans Brinker!

It's our last week focusing on responsibility as a group,and we are excited to wrap it up by sharing thoughts and experiences from our family book, Hans Brinker or the Silver Skates. I hope that you are enjoying it! Please do any of the following Inspirements that you are able, and we will share them together.

Listen, watch, or read at least 1 of these:

Talk with your family, and answer any of these questions:
1. What were some responsibilities that Hans had? How did he show accountability? 
2. What were some of Mother's responsibilities? How did she show accountability? 
3. Did Gretel have any responsibilities? If so, what were they? How did she show accountability? 
4. What do you love about the book? The history and geography of Holland? The life stories of Hans and his family? Other parts?

Prepare to Share (please choose one or more):
1. Draw a picture of part of the story…an activity, the topography or scenery, the structures (windmills, dikes, etc.), the characters.
2. Find a Dutch song for the class to listen to. If it is on the internet, you may copy and paste the link into the comments. Or bring a cd, or instrument to play it for the class.
3. Find a poem about the Netherlands or write a poem about a character or part from the book.

 Also, if there are any activities or Inspirements you have still been working on from previous weeks, bring those experiences to share too!

We hope you enjoyed Kisses from Katie and learning a little bit more about the struggles the children of Africa go through and a little bit about the country itself.  As a family discuss how Katie showed courage.  What part of the book stood out to you as the most courageous? Faith - History and Geography

This coming week we will be exploring several aspects of the reformation including Germany - culture and music, the Printing Press, Martin Luther and how faith ties it all together.  You have many choices to inspire you this week. Read the section in t his book  on Gutenberg on page 33.  Discuss how the invention of the printing press has changed your life. Research, share and discuss of the faith of one of your ancestors.  How does their faith help you today?   We'd love you to write or record your story and share here in the comments. Pick a German game, craft, play or song  to learn as a family from the Germany section of Month 10 on libraries of hope.   There are lots of options! Share the story of  Boxes for Katje  we read in class with your family. Can you remember what it was about?  Think of a way your family can serve someone who is struggling and do it. See you soon!

GeoQuest: Africa and Courage

We are going to Africa this month!  Africa is a huge continent - the second largest in the world and it is made up of many different countries and climates.  There is so much to discover here but let's begin by getting in the mood by listening to the steel drums .   Drums have a deep symbolic and historical meaning in Africa.  They accompany any manner of ceremony.  They are the first telephone of Africa.  These are more modern but they sound really amazing. As a family take this video tour of Africa.  Notice how each region is similar and very different.  Which part would you want to visit?  Where would you chose to live?  Why? ---Tour of Africa by National Geographic East Africa Northern Africa Southern Africa West and Central Africa Africa for a long time relied on superstition and didn't have a lot of access to religion until David Livingston traveled there in the 1840s.   ---Read about David Livingston in the Libraries of Hope book and watch this short video
