Learning Becomes Me

We're wrapping up our second month! If you haven't gotten the chance to finish reading Hans Brinker , keep reading or try to watch the older, non-Disney, version with your family. Inspirements: 1. What were some of your favorite parts of the book? Did you like learning about Holland? The funny parts? The sweet relationships and good examples? Write a paragraph, or just a list of your favorites. 2. Choose your most favorite part from your list and draw a picture of it! Do the very best you can...I can't wait to see what you bring.  3. Have you written poetry before? In class, we are going to write different kinds poems about your favorite Hans Brinker  scenes. They will be Haiku and limericks. Haiku poetry has three lines, and the first line has five syllables, the second has seven, and the third has five again. So the pattern goes 5/7/5 . They generally don't rhyme, and include nature, emotions, or natural events. Here are some examples for you to read.....

This coming week we will be exploring several aspects of the reformation including Germany - culture and music, the Printing Press, Martin Luther and how faith ties it all together.  You have many choices to inspire you this week. Read the section in t his book  on Gutenberg on page 33.  Discuss how the invention of the printing press has changed your life. Research, share and discuss of the faith of one of your ancestors.  How does their faith help you today?   We'd love you to write or record your story and share here in the comments. Pick a German game, craft, play or song  to learn as a family from the Germany section of Month 10 on libraries of hope.   There are lots of options! Share the story of  Boxes for Katje  we read in class with your family. Can you remember what it was about?  Think of a way your family can serve someone who is struggling and do it. See you soon!

How science and faith work together is an important discussion point. Many people feel so strongly about these two individual subjects that they have a hard time finding balance or believing in both. But Albert Einstein said, "Science without religion is lame. Religion without science is blind." So do they work together or no? Let's see what we can find! We had a fun day today learning about Holland, Hans Brinker and also bees.  We did some cross stitching - here are links for the supplies if you wanted your own set of everything we used:  Here are some  needles  but I got a set of 6 needlepoint/tapestry needles at Hobby Lobby for 1.59 and you could also use a coupon on top of that.  I get these little yarn balls - they are cheapest on Amazon and there are tons of sellers with different variety of colors. I bought the ones linked in December and we've doing weaving, cross stitch and crochet with them so far.  The plastic canvas can be found in many different sizes at any craft store by the yarn section.  I hope that helps! We had a good time exploring responsibility and accountability in bees last week.  We learned that each bee contributes on 1/12 tsp. in its lifetime but by working together they produce enough to last the hive through the winter and more to share.  When we work together with our families and communities we can accomplish a lot more than when we work alone. *Can you find something you can do as a family or as a group that will help you accomplish something hard in a small amount of time?  Ideas might be to clean out the garage, build something, clean the whole house in 30 mins etc. We also learned about tessellations and the Fibanacci sequence and discussed the use of math in nature and our responsibility to notice the gifts/knowledge of God that show his hand and be grateful for his guidance. * Here are some great tessellation coloring pages - pick one and show us your pattern. Hello Leader League, It was fun hearing what you had to say in class today, we love hearing from you.  Here is a reminder about your assignment from W#1 and what else you can do in the coming weeks.  Everyone should complete level 1 or core but you can do more.  There are so many great things to learn and do!   Core: Read the words and lyrics of the song Star Spangled Banner and highlight anything you think discusses leadership, responsibility and accountability and be prepared to share your view point.
